More Left 4 Dead DLC Announced

Posted by coblos On August - 4 - 2009

Kind of funny that not so long ago a group of vocal fans had called for a boycott of Left 4 dead 2 believing it would mean the end of any new content for L4D. With the announcement of new campaigns and the recent release of authoring tools the game is a long way from dead. It’s living dead!

Crash Course Campaign Due in September

August 4, 2009 – Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life,PortalTeam Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the next major downloadable content (DLC) update for its co-operative zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead (L4D), the #1 new game title on Xbox 360 and PC in 2008

Entitled “Crash Course,” the latest DLC delivers new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay to both platforms. Targeted for release in September, “Crash Course” bridges the gap between the end of the “No Mercy” campaign and the beginning of “Death Toll” in the original game, expanding the game universe with new locations, new dialogue from the original cast, and an explosive finale

While containing both Survival maps and a Co-operative Campaign, the primary goal of “Crash” is to deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game’s existing Versus campaigns. A recharge timer for infected teammates has also been added, and item spawn behavior has changed for more balanced gameplay.

“Since the release of Left 4 Dead last November, the design team has been excited about creating new experiences for this world and allowing players to do the same, by releasing much of our internal toolset, like the Survival Pack and Authoring Tools,” said Gabe Newell. “We’re working with the fans toward the ongoing entertainment value of the product.”

Left 4 Dead is an action horror game from Valve that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games. Released in November of 2008, L4D has earned over 50 industry awards from outlets around the world and sold almost 3 million copies worldwide.

Left 4 Dead: Crash Course is targeted for release in September and will be available free of charge on the PC and for 560 Gamer points on Xbox Live.

Left 4 Dead 2 announced

Posted by coblos On June - 2 - 2009

Valve have officially revealed details for Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), as part of the Microsoft Pre-E3 Press Conference. It was announced as part of an X-Box 360 line up, and was also confirmed that the game would be coming to PC.

Scheduled for release 17th November 2009

“A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008’s top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored game play made possible by the AI Director. With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games.”

“The new game introduces the AI Director 2.0, and takes game play to the next level, giving the Director the ability to change world objects, weather effects and pathways, as well as tailoring sounds, effects and even the enemy population in order to match individual player performance – meaning that every unique game session can be fitted to suit, providing a “satisfying and uniquely challenging experience”. There’s new Survivors, new boss zombies, new weapons, new items – a much bigger game than the original, with more campaigns (both co-op and Versus), and new maps available at launch.”

“Left 4 Dead 2 is set at roughly the same time as the original – just after the outbreak that turned most of the population into various zombie mutants. Players assume the role of 4 new “Survivors,” each with their own personality and new dialog. The game leads these “Survivors” through the southeastern region of the US – from Savannah, Georgia thru the bayou country, and climaxing in New Orleans’ French Quarter.”

L4D – SDK beta released

Posted by coblos On May - 17 - 2009

L4D Beta is now available, should make for some great new maps.

Today we are opening the beta of the Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools to the public. It is available as a free download for all owners of the PC version of Left 4 Dead, and can be found under the “Tools” tab in Steam.

The L4D Authoring Tools include modified versions of the same tools we used to produce Left 4 Dead.

Using the L4D Authoring Tools, you may create your own campaign maps, character skins, 3D models, sound effects, and music and load them into the game.

Here’s what’s included:

  • Updated version of Hammer, the source level editor
  • Updated suite of command line compiling utilities
  • Updated Particle editor
  • Updated Faceposer
  • Example maps, common infected, props, and explosives

This release also introduces a pair of plug-ins for SketchUp, a 3D modeling program you may download for free. You may use these plug-ins to create building blocks and props that can be imported into Hammer for use in game levels.

So how can other people play the maps you create? Don’t worry, we are updating matchmaking to fully support the new maps.

Our plan is to release a beta of the Authoring Tools now so the community can start working on maps in the full environment. In a few weeks we will then release the updated match making to allow users to play those new maps and campaigns.

If you want to get started on the beta, we suggest joining two mailing lists:
http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/l4dmapper

And the general Source mapper’s list.http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlmappers

This is beta software, so if you have any problems or issues, please send them to the l4dmapper email list.

We have also updated our developer Wikihttp://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Authoring_Tools/SDK_(Left_4_Dead)

And don’t forget. The matchmaking system will be updated in a few weeks so everyone can play your hard work. We will be releasing additional information and tools next week to show how you can package up your maps and how they are delivered to players. We want to make sure everyone has a smooth experience as they download and new Versus maps, Survival mode maps, and single and multi-map campaigns.
